BHUTAN'S
ARTS AND CRAFTS
Bhutan is proud of her superb and artistic heritage. "The thirteen
arts" Zorig chusum: Zo means "to make" Rig "Science"
and Chusum "thirteen".
During Zhabdrung's time, the beginning of Arts and Crafts were established
through support from various experts who further promoted their use and
development.
The first six areas included SCULPTURE under the guidance of Trulku Dzing;
PAINTING under the supervision of Tsang Khenchen Jamyang Palden Gyatsho;
DZONG CONSTRUCTION under the guidance of architect Zowo Balingpa;
EMBROIDERY under the direction of Tshem Zowo Ngonchung; XYLOGRAPHY or WOOD
CARVING under the instruction of Sherab Wangchuk; and CALLIGRAPHY under
the instruction of Lopen Tshewang.

Colors Of Bhutan
Bhutanese weaving hold a special place in Bhutanese society usually as an income generating source to supplement the agricultural income especially for rural people. Weaving is done always by women and it would be very rare to see a male weaver. The rich and complex art of textiles are richly embedded in the culture and history of Bhutan.
Bhutanese weavers are highly skilled artist with their skilful mastery over colors, patterns and compositions. The intricate designs are unmatched anywhere else in the world. These products of diverse regional and ethnic specialization, taken together constitute one of the greatest textile traditions. Bhutanese textiles virtually unknown to the outside world two decades ago, now has a steadily growing following in the west.
