ART OF THANGKA PAINTING (lhazo)

The Art of Thangka painting belongs to the exalted Art of the Body and includes the three stages of learning the painting of thangka.

During the first stage, the painter is taught how to properly draw the eight lucky signs, mountains, lakes, flowers and plants in order to develop the nerves of the hand and to make the hand soft and flexible so that perfect images can be produced.

Once the hand's nerves are well trained, the artist would then move to the second stage of learning which focuses on drawing the four major figures which include the peaceful figure - Buddha, a mixture of peaceful and wrathful figure - Guru Rinpoche, a wrathful figure - Vajrapani and a female figure - Tara.

The last stage of learning concentrates on coloring the figures and outlining in accordance with the prescribed text.

The finishing touches are used to highlight or outline the images and then to open the eyes of the figure.
