ART OF TEXTILE (thagzo)
Bhutan is known around the world for its beautiful and unique textiles which are handwoven by both women and men. There have been innumerable weaving masters throughout the past centuries.
Bhutan's textile is neither similar to the embroidered silk of China nor to the plain silk of India but instead they are completely different in terms of their fabrication, weaving, patterns, and colors.
According to Buddhism, if a weaver produces cloth and gives it to another, her or his positive action will be increased, and eventually enable the weaver to be born in the pure land where ornaments are in abundance.
Following this, there are always offerings of a set of clothes or new silk to the newly reincarnated lama or those being honored by friends and followers along with prayers and wishes for continued good actions.
Each region has a specialty area or type related to textile production. For example, the Kurtoe region produces Kishu thagre whereas the Trashigang region is well-known for its production of ai-kapor.
Bumthang produces marthra and yathra whereas weavers from Trongsa produce chare and takri chenma, and weavers from Kheng produce pangkheb, monthag, and pontshed.
