Art of Paper Making (shogzo)

For centuries, calligraphers transcribed the teachings of Buddha and commentaries related to the teachings on paper.

There are many ways of making paper in accordance with the availability of raw materials but in Bhutan, paper is mainly made from the bark of the Daphne tree which is plentiful and found in many locations around the country.

There are two different kinds of paper produced by the traditional paper makers.

One is quite thick and slightly brown in color and is locally known as tsharshog, which means bamboo paper, and the other one is known as reshog, which means cloth-paper.

Bamboo paper is made in a bamboo frame and its colors is brown whereas cloth-paper is made in a cloth frame and its color is white.

Shown in the picture are masks made of paper used in mask dance festivals.
