ART OF EMBROIDERY (tshemzo)

The Art of Embroidery has played a very important role in the making of thangkas and other decorative clothes throughout Bhutanese history.

Many embroidery-masters have come forth since the 17th century and they have embroidered thousands of other thangkas and other items used for religious purposes.

During the time of the 3rd King, Jigme Dorje Wangchuck, there was only one man, Durlop Dorje of Bumthang, who was skilled at embroidery.

As His Majesty the King commissioned him to instruct young monks, a school of embroidery was established at Dechen Choling Palace with thirty young monks from Punakha Dratshang in 1957.

Lopen Ugyen (b. 1938) from Ruepesa of Wangdi was also a student at the embroidery school. Later, he became one of the best-known embroidery masters and he embroidered many huge thongdrols of the eight manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava and other deities.

His embroidered thongdrols unfold from the roof-tops of many Dzongs and temples on auspicious days or during the celebrations for public display and devotion.
