ART OF BAMBOO WEAVING & CANE CRAFTS (tsharzo)
For centuries, Bhutanese people have woven many varieties of bamboo items. The art of bamboo weaving is still alive and practised today mainly in the areas of Kheng which is located in Zhamgang district, Nanung of Mongar district, and Trimshing Kangpar of Trashigang district.
Bamboo weavers are skilled in the production of a variety of functional objects such as bamboo plates, baskets, bamboo-sieves, roofing, fencing, mats for drying grains, and so on.
Raw materials used for bamboo weaving grow mainly in forests falling within moderate altitude ranges similar to that of Kheng, Trashigang, and Mongar. As the bamboo begins to grow in the autumn season, the newer bamboo shoots are not allowed to be cut or harvested until February or thereafter as this allows the plant to regenerate and prevents damage or destruction to the main plant.
